A search is ongoing for Eric Fernando Gutierrez Molina, a 32-year-old American Airlines flight attendant who mysteriously vanished during a layover in Medellín, Colombia. His disappearance on Saturday night has left his loved ones—specifically his partner, Ernesto Carranza, and his best friend, Sharom Gil—desperate for answers.
Night Out Turns to Nightmare
Gutierrez Molina, a North Texas resident and U.S. citizen, was reportedly last in contact with his friends while enjoying a night out in Medellin's El Poblado neighborhood, a popular area among international tourists. Friends say he went out with a fellow flight attendant after their flight landed.
“I spoke with him Saturday evening, and he said he was going to go out with his friends,” recalled Gil. However, concern grew when Carranza was unable to reach him the next morning, especially after discovering that Gutierrez Molina's phone seemed to be pinging from two locations not near his hotel.
“Both locations were nowhere near where he was supposed to sleep for the night,” Carranza explained.
Adding to the uncertainty, the female colleague that accompanied him reportedly had trouble recalling parts of their night out. “We don’t want to disclose anything that happened to her, but she was also a victim of whatever Fernando is going through right now,” Gil stated.
Family Seeking Answers
In a heart-wrenching statement, Carranza admitted to feeling "shattered" by Gutierrez Molina's disappearance. “I want to believe that he's alive, and I want to continue believing that he's alive,” he said, emphasizing the torturous uncertainty that has gripped their lives.
Gutierrez Molina’s father has traveled from Texas to Medellín to assist local authorities in their search efforts. Colombian officials have activated protocols for missing persons and are coordinating with the U.S. Embassy to locate Gutierrez Molina.
Manuel Villa Mejía, security secretary for Medellín, has assured the public that locating Gutierrez Molina safely is a top priority: “We will remain on the ground, working tirelessly and without pause, until we find him—hopefully very soon—so that he may be reunited with his family.”
Response from American Airlines and Authorities
American Airlines has expressed support for the family and mentioned that they are actively engaged with local law enforcement. A spokesperson said, “We are doing all we can to support our team member's family during this time.”
Though not much information is available through the U.S. Embassy due to privacy laws, they confirmed that they are closely monitoring the situation. “The State Department stands ready to provide all consular assistance to Americans in need abroad,” stated an official.
The Association of Professional Flight Attendants also expressed their commitment to supporting efforts to locate Gutierrez Molina, underlining the distressing situation faced by his colleagues.
Ongoing Investigation
As authorities continue their search efforts, Carranza and Gil are calling for more communication. “We’re so lost right now,” Gil said, highlighting the emotional turmoil faced by those closest to Gutierrez Molina. They remain hopeful but stressed the need for updates from those conducting the investigation.
The case brings attention to the broader issues of safety for American travelers abroad and raises questions about the protocols in place during layovers for airline staff.
Gutierrez Molina's friends and family continue to hold onto hope in the face of uncertainty as the search progresses.
